iPhone/iPod Touch Firmware 3.1 Features

Well, here we go again, after the successful release of OS 3.0, Apple is at work on FW 3.1. They have currently seeded 3 betas to developers and a September release date is expected, along with possibly a new iPod Touch. The new iPod Touch will supposedly have a camera and mic allowing for phone calls via VOIP and also 64 GB worth of space.  Here is the list of new features for Firmware 3.1 for iPhone and iPod Touch so far:

  • General speed improvement in booting, app launching and performance
  • Monitoring/debugging apps over Wi-Fi for developers
  • Improved battery life for iPhone 3G & 3GS only
  • Better accuracy in indicating battery percentage and battery percentage toggle for all devices
  • Voice Control for 3GS compatible with Bluetooth headsets
  • Safari speed increases  and Fraud Protection Toggle in Safari Settings
  • Save video attachments to your photo album
  • “Trim Original” and “Save as New Clip” for Video Recording in 3GS, save a copy of your video before trimming
  • APIs to allow third party apps to access videos and edit them, meaning video editing apps in the Appstore
  • Improvements to  the Compass on the 3GS in terms of performance
  • MMS now only allows a maximum of 5 photos sent at once
  • Copy/Paste functions for numeric keypad in Phone app
  • Toggle to password protect the “Find my iPhone”
  • View Tethering usage data
  • Use of Augmented Reality apps
  • General minor bug fixes from OS 3.0
  • The “123? button from the keyboard is now replaced by “_123″
  • During a restore, the screen is is black again, instead of purple
